As technology becomes more integrated into our lives, perpetrators of domestic violence increasingly exploit digital tools to exert control and surveillance over their victims. Phone and location hacking are common methods used to track and monitor victims, compromising their safety and privacy. To combat this, it is essential for individuals to take proactive measures to safeguard their digital presence.

Firstly, securing your phone with a strong, unique password is fundamental. Avoid using easily guessable information such as birthdays or simple sequences. Biometric authentication, like fingerprint or facial recognition, provides an additional layer of security. Regularly updating your phone’s operating system and applications ensures that you have the latest security patches, protecting against known vulnerabilities.

Secondly, be cautious about app permissions. Many apps request access to your location, contacts, and other sensitive data. Review these permissions and disable any that are unnecessary. Specifically, location services should be turned off unless actively needed. For added safety, consider using a privacy-focused app that monitors and restricts access to your personal information.

In situations where you suspect your phone has been compromised, performing a factory reset can eliminate malware. However, this should be done cautiously, as it will erase all data on the device. Back up important information before proceeding and change all passwords afterward.

Creating new email accounts and phone numbers that are not connected to your previous ones is vital for enhancing privacy. This step helps ensure that the abuser cannot track your new contact details through existing accounts. Use these new emails and phone numbers exclusively for communicating with trusted contacts and essential services. Avoid linking them to social media or any platforms where the abuser might search for you.

When it comes to communication, use encrypted messaging apps like Signal or WhatsApp, which offer end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only you and the intended recipient can read the messages. Be wary of sharing your location through these apps and consider disabling any features that allow location sharing.

Lastly, consider seeking assistance from domestic violence support organizations, which can provide guidance on digital safety and other resources. These organizations often have hotlines and can help devise a comprehensive safety plan tailored to your situation.

By taking these precautions, individuals can significantly enhance their digital security, making it more difficult for abusers to monitor and control their movements and communications. Focusing on digital safety is key to regaining control and staying safe from domestic violence.
