April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)—a time to uplift survivors, raise public awareness, and commit to ending sexual violence in all its forms. At Legal Services of North Dakota (LSND), we stand alongside survivors, advocates, and our incredible partners at the North Dakota Domestic and Sexual Violence Coalition (NDDSVC) (formerly CAWS North Dakota), as we work to create communities rooted in dignity, equity, and safety.

Sexual violence affects people of all genders, ages, and backgrounds. In the U.S., nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of contact sexual violence. But behind every statistic is a person—a survivor navigating trauma, healing, and often, an overwhelming legal system.

This year’s National SAAM theme, “Together We Act, United We Change” reminds us that prevention happens when we all come together—neighbors, coworkers, advocates, and leaders—to create spaces where respect, consent, and accountability are the norm.

What LSND Is Doing

At LSND, we provide free civil legal services to low-income individuals and survivors of crime across North Dakota. Survivors of sexual violence often face a range of legal issues—from housing instability and protection orders, to employment stabilization, family law matters, and privacy concerns. Our attorneys help survivors secure safety, reclaim stability, and begin the path toward healing.

Through our work, we see firsthand the power of access to justice. When survivors know their rights and have someone standing beside them, the system becomes less intimidating—and real change becomes possible.

We’re also proud to collaborate with NDDSVC, a statewide coalition that supports North Dakota’s domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy programs. Together, we work to improve services for survivors, strengthen community responses, and ensure survivors have access to both advocacy and legal support.

How You Can Help

You don’t have to be a lawyer or advocate to make a difference during SAAM. Here are a few things you can do right now:

  • Believe survivors. When someone shares their experience, listen with compassion and without judgment.
  • Educate yourself. Learn about consent, healthy relationships, and the signs of sexual abuse or coercion.
  • Speak up. Whether it’s challenging rape culture or supporting a friend, your voice matters.
  • Support survivor-centered organizations. Donate, volunteer, or share the work of groups like NDDSVC and LSND.
  • Spread awareness. Use your platform to share resources, facts, and messages of support.
